Burden basket; somewhat worn and very grimy from use. Conical shape; twined. 2-face overlay designs in white: thin dotted stripe below rim; band of connected right triangles below; dominant design, 3 zigzag bands of something similar to "foot design" of Northwest California; below this, a sort of stripe. A hoop is lashed inside top edge to form rim with buckskin. Carrying strap is part buckskin and part cotton cloth. Bottom of basket was begun with rawhide weft. 3-strand twining and plain twining. Tag: "1083". Three other tags "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined conical burden basket, used. Crossed warp start, in a perpendicular style. Warps are a peeled shoot and wefts are conifer root with a beargrass design overlay. There are 1.5 inches of wide three strand twining at the base followed by two rows of plain twining, followed by three rows of three strand twining, followed by two rows of plain twining, followed by two rows of three strand twining, followed by two rows of plain twining, followed by one row of twining over multiple warps in a unique non-linear style, plain twining continues to the rim, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. There is a reinforcing rod held on at the rim by leather lashing, in Southern Humboldt Athabaskan style, as well as coiled peeled and unpeeled shoots. The overlay is irregular, with the primary overlay on the exterior. The workface is on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction.
