Twined, bowl-shaped.  Grimy from use.  1-faced white overlay design, with lattice-twined grass stems dividing design.  Three-strand twining for 1.5 cm radius from start; 2 single rows at approximately 5.5 and 6 cm from start.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-20844, described as Small, twined basket with black and white design.  "NW Cal att". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket bowl.  The basket probably has a crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is possibly hazel (Corylus cornuta californica).  The background weft is conifer root (Pinophyta).  The weft design overlay is beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax) and a red and black fern. At the starting knot there is a .5 inch of three strand twining. After that .25 inch of plain twining followed by .25 inch of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues until the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The design at the base is two bands of beargrass. On the side is a horizontal band of vertical rods of alternating beargrass and fern.  The design is mirrored on the interior of the basket.   The basket base has an undulating surface.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is on the outside and inside.  The basket is from Northeast California, based on the use double sided overlay for all of the designs.  The basket may be Wintu.

Red pattern is Chain fern (Adiantum pedatum) in Alder (Alnus rubra). Rim bound with grape (Vitus californica). Small, twined. Grimy from use. Hoop broken in one spot. 2-faced red and white overlay. All-over stepped design. Below rim, a white band with a geometric motif repeated. Mostly plain twining. 3-strand twining occurs from the bottom up 7 cm; also the two top rows. Hoop stitched to the top. Inside the bottom scaffolding remains the bottom 12 cm.  The packstrap is of blue denim and is tied on with buckskin thongs.

Black dye is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Red color is Chain fern (Woodwardia spinulosa) dyed in Alder (Alnus rubra). Small, shallow, twined; very fine finish. One horizontal break of warps. Almost completely overlaid. 2-faced overlay in white, black, and alder red. Design consists of 4 sets of 2 parallel stacks of zigzagging quadrilaterals; concentric circles of vertical and dotted stripes on bottom. 3-strand twined on bottom where not overlaid.
