Two chimneys emit smoke. Two buildings are embellished with slogans (see below). Inscription: On right: “Long life Mao Zedong Thought” (毛泽东思想万岁 Mao Zedong sixiang wansui); on left: “Long Live the Communist Party” (共产党万岁 gongchandang wansui). On the back a long five-line inscription in full-form characters from Mao quotations (毛主席語錄).

Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23497, described as A hand-painted decal depicts a red sun rising over a village intended to be Mao Zedong’s home village of Shaoshan. Inscriptions at upper right and on the reverse. Inscription: Front: “The sun rises from Shaoshan” (日从韶山出 ri cong Shaoshan chu). On the reverse: decal of a couplet from Mao Zedong’s poem Reaching Shaoshan (到韶山): “Happy, I see wave upon wave of paddy and beans/ And all around heroes home-bound in the evening mist” (喜看稻菽千重浪，遍地英雄下夕煙 xi kan daoshu qian chong lang, piandi yingxiong xia xi yan). Kiln mark on the foot: “Qimen, Anhui 71” (安徽祁門 Anhui Qimen 71)
