Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-2310, described as Basket; twined. Warp is Willow (Salix), weft is yellow Pine. White pattern is Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Black color is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Red color is Chain fern (Woodwardia spinulosa) dyed in Alder (Alnus rubra). In good condition. Globular shape. Almost completely overlaid, except bottom. Overlay is 2-faced; stripes around rim and a band of suspended triangles; major design consists of 2 horizontal bands of slanted diamonds, striped red and black, on white ground. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twining occurs: at 4 cm radius from start, 3 rows starting at 6.5 cm out, and 2 rows from 10.5 cm out from start.

Three-strand twining for 1.5 cm radius from start; 2 single rows at approximately 5.5 and 6 cm from start.

Two horizontal zigzag bands of red and black stacked parallelograms dominate. 3-strand twining: one row at basket rim, from start out about 3.5 cm radius, 2 rows at 4.5 cm from start, 2 rows at 8 cm from start.

Lattice twining reinforcing rod below rim. "An anomalous piece in that it has Lassik features of construction but a Klamath R. style design centered on two rows of fine lattice twining." Tag found in basket, apparently from exhibit "Twined mush basket. Lassik. California. Coll. J.C. Merriam". Second tag on basket "Lassik att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket cooking bowl, not used. Crossed warp starting knot, not Northwestern California style. Warps are a peeled shoot, probably willow, and the wefts are conifer root with a beargrass and maidenhair fern overlay. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 2 1/2 inches, followed by plain twining for 1/4 inch, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining, followed by plain twining for 2 1/4 inches, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 2 1/4 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining around a small rod, followed by plain twining for 3/4 inch, followed by one weft row of lattice twining around a small rod, followed by plain twining for 2 1/2 inches, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining around a large rod, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by three rows of plain twining. The rim is trimmed, with no warp sticks extending beyond the rim. The design is one horizontal band, with beargrass outlining a maidenhair fern zigzag and beargrass two stacked triangles repeating above and below the main band. The basket has an exterior workface. The overlay is on the exterior and interior irregularly. The slant of weft twist is up to the right; the work direction is to the right. The basket slightly undulates. The basket has all of the attributes of a Lassik or Wailaki basket.

Black maidenhair fern overlay. 2-faced overlay; top row of basket is 3-strand twining, the next two are twill twined, and the fourth is 3-strand. There are also 4 areas of 3-strand twining on the bottom.

Dirty and worn from usage. Cylindrical shape. Very flexible. White 2-faced overlay designs; two thin stripes at top; horizontal bands, two of connected triangles and two of connected diamonds; with a repeating angled motif between the 2 band areas. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twined for approximately 9 cm radius from start, and two rows at approximately 12 cm from start.
