Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented.  The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay background is beargrass with maidenhair fern designs.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch below the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is eight sets of three stacked triangles above and below two horizontal lines.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, indented.  The warp material is probably hazel.  The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red- dyed woodwardia.  At the starting knot there is three strand twining that extends for .75 inches, changing to plain twining for 1 inch, and then 1 weft row of three strand twining, followed by 3 weft rows of diagonal twining.  Plain twining continues up to the rim. The main design is six elements with four tiers of rectangles each with a triangle on top, every other element is reversed.  The basket's base has a beargrass overlay design radiating from the start. The rim has four weft rows of conifer root with no overlay. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.
