"Frog"s hand" design (groups of linear design with projecting triangles).  Tag "Kl. R. Tr. att.".  A swastika is in ink on the bottom of the basket. Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket bowl.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel.  The background wefts are conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern.  Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until one inch below the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining.   After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed.  The design background overlay is beargrass. The main design is three horizontal rows of seven elements comprised of seven lines with triangles at the end.   At the rim are seven sets of three lines with triangles at the end.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the interior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the interior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Second tag: "Klamath R. Tribes att."  Third tag "Kl R. Tr. Att." Per Ralph Shanks:  Openwork tray.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is hazel.  The wefts are conifer root, as well as possibly another material.  The basket is plain twined, with even spacing between the wefts.  The warps are crossed for two rows begining 1 inch below the rim.  After this there are three close weft rows.   The rim is trimmed.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The work direction is to the right.  The workface is on the exterior. Rattan rim.  Tag " Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl with pedestal, made for sale.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warps are willow or hazel.  The rim has rattan like materials.  The weft is conifer root with an overlay of beargrass background and designs in red dyed woodwardia, one weft row of maiden hair fern, and two weft rows of unknown black material that has multiple strands.  Starting at the bowl's starting knot there are four weft rows of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining up to the rim, where there is 1/8 inch of open work, with crossed warps, followed by two weft rows of plain twining.  There are two reinforcing rods on either side of the rim.  The pedestal of the basket, starting at the part furthest from the basket bowl, has a similar rim, with two reinforcing rods, followed by 1/8 to 1/4 inch of open work crossed warps, followed by plain twining to where the pedestal meets the bowl, where there is one weft row of three strand twining followed by three weft rows of plain twining, followed by several weft rows of three strand twining.  The primary design includes isolated elements of horizontal steps, three stacked vertically.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is single sided, on the exterior, except on the base which is on the interior.  The basket is from Northwest California.

Sidewise chevrons inside brown mass.  Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.".  There is a swastika in ink on the inside. Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular twined basket bowl, not used.  Indented crossed warp starting knot with a single sided overlay on the outside.  The warp material is probably willow or possibly hazel.  The weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay background is beargrass, with designs in black maiden hair fern stem.  At the starting knot there is 11/2 inches of three strand twining, after that 2 inches of plain twining, after that two weft rows of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until the rim, where there is two weft rows of three strand twining.  The design is complex with three sets of patterns with triangles and zigzags, with one extra row of triangles between the designs and a ring of small triangles at the rim.  At the base is one black ring. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface.  This basket is from Northwestern California.

Rim is alternating areas of brown and straw colored material, misshapen.  Tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att.".  There is a swastika in ink on the interior as well as some illegible letters and numbers. Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket bowl, incurving. Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is in beargrass,  maidenhair fern, and a reddish black material.  Starting at the starting knot, there is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by 2 inches of plain twining, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there is a 1/16 inch of parallel warp open work.  The rim is comprised of a few weft rows of plain twining with one reinforcing rod wrapped with alternating beargrass and a reddish black material.  The main design is stepped parallelograms bisected by three checkered lines finished with a triangle at the top and bottom.  At the edge of the base there is a horizontal line of triangles.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.

The warp material is possibly hazel or willow.  The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass and the designs are in red-dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining followed by plain twining until the edge of the base where there are two weft rows of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues up to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining, located two weft rows below the rim.  At the base there is a band of beargrass overlay with a many-sided star pattern in woodwardia and maidenhair fern.  The main design is ten diagonal patterns in woodwardia with horizontal black maidenhair fern lines in them.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface.  The overlay is mainly on the outside.  The rim is trimmed.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the designs.

A swastika is on the back of the plaque, in ink. Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket plaque. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow. The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, black-dyed woodwardia, and red-dyed woodwardia.  At the starting knot there is .25 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until .25 inch below the rim where there is open work, with crossed warps.  That is followed by 2 weft rows of plain twining.  The warp sticks are trimmed and a rod was added to support the rim. The rim and the last two weft rows of twining are wrapped in beargrass. The main design is a flower/star design with three bands of triangles.  The basket has a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is primarily one-sided.   The basket is possibly Wiyot, based on the use of black-dyed woodwardia.

The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red dyed woodwardia.  At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by five weft rows of plain twining over two warps, followed by plain twining, until .25 inch below the rim where there is openwork.  The rim is formed by at least one weft row of plain twining with one rod that was added to support the rim. The rim is wrapped in beargrass and maidenhair fern. The design includes three clusters of triangular elements.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction.  The overlay is primarily one-sided but there is one band of design on the back face, in red dyed woodwardia and beargrass.   The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Whilkut based the band on the back face.

The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red dyed woodwardia.  From the starting knot there is .25 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining.  That is followed by a .5 inch of openwork done in crossed warps with one weft row of plain twining in the center.  The rim is formed by two weft rows of plain twining and at least one rod that was added to support the rim. The rim is covered with predominantly beargrass as well as maidenhair fern, and probably red dyed woodwardia in three clusters. The design is comprised of a horizontal band of triangles in red and black.  The plaque has an up to the right slant of weft twist and rightward work direction.  The overlay is primarily one-sided but there is one band of design on the backface.   The basket is possibly Whilkut, based the band on the backface.

The overlay is primarily one-sided but a band of design is on the backface.   The basket is possibly Whilkut, based the band on the backface. Original description of rectangles does not match the design.
