They float above pine branches that represent the enduring quality of Mao’s thought. The original design had the two figures encircled in a pink line that culminates in a radiating star over their heads. Each scene is separated by a printed slogan: Read Chairman Mao’s books (读毛主席的书 du Mao zhuxi de shu); Listen to Chairman Mao’s words (听毛主席的话 ting Mao zhuxi de hua); In work follow Chairman Mao’s directives (照毛主席的指示办事 zhao Mao zhuxi de zhishi banshi). The motifs are printed between a double blue bowstring at rim and a blue line around stomach. Inscription: No kiln mark. Place of Origin: China Condition:  Very good. Building are at the foot of a terraced hillside. The reverse is inscribed in green, all under a pale blue rim. The design probably refers “up to the hills, down to the countryside” (上山下乡 shangshan xiaxiang), a movement to send youth out of the cities.
