The composition duplicates that of a well-known statue, the so-called Antinoos (better Hermes) of the Belvedere, Vatican Museum, Rome.

Opinions differ whether the subject is Artemis or Nikandre herself. The dedication reads: “Nickandre dedicated me to the farshooter, to the dart-scatterer (Artemis)--Nikandre the noble daughter of Deinodikes of Naxos, and sister of Deinomenes, and wife of Phracos.” The date of this rude sculptor is the VII Century, B.C. Part of one arm is missing and the face is battered.

Height 0-.9 meters. Described TAUpTá 21. The goddess has wings on her shoulders and feet. She wears a tight belted tunic with flat bands once elaborately painted. The statue rested on a stem, leaving both feet free. Another one, by Archermos, is in the Akropolis Museum. Location: Delos, Cyclades. National Museum.
