Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-16557, described as Basket; twined. Warp is Willow (Salix), weft is yellow Pine. White pattern is Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Black color is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Red color is Chain fern (Woodwardia spinulosa) dyed in Alder (Alnus rubra). Large, deep, twined. Worn from use. Red overlay coming off. White, red, and black overlay, 2-faced; diagonal sawtooth bands, some containing diamonds; flanked by diagonal rows of triangles. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twining occurs: 4 cm radius from start, 3 rows begin 5.5 cm out, 2 rows at 8 cm out, 2 rows at 10 cm out, 3 rows at 11.5 cm out, 2 rows at 13 cm out, 1 row at 15 cm out, 2 rows at 17 cm out, 2 rows at 19 cm from start.

Red pattern is Chain fern (Adiantum pedatum) in Alder (Alnus rubra). Rim bound with grape (Vitus californica). Small, twined. Grimy from use. Hoop broken in one spot. 2-faced red and white overlay. All-over stepped design. Below rim, a white band with a geometric motif repeated. Mostly plain twining. 3-strand twining occurs from the bottom up 7 cm; also the two top rows. Hoop stitched to the top. Inside the bottom scaffolding remains the bottom 12 cm. The packstrap is of blue denim and is tied on with buckskin thongs.

Globose. Mostly overlay, 2-faced, red and black on white ground. Dotted triangles on red/brown. White designs on bottom. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twining occurs: top 3 rows, approximately 2.5 cm from start.

Black dye is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Red color is Chain fern (Woodwardia spinulosa) dyed in Alder (Alnus rubra). Small, shallow, twined; very fine finish. One horizontal break of warps. Almost completely overlaid. 2-faced overlay in white, black, and alder red. Design consists of 4 sets of 2 parallel stacks of zigzagging quadrilaterals; concentric circles of vertical and dotted stripes on bottom. 3-strand twined on bottom where not overlaid.

Red pattern is Chain fern (Woodwardia spinulosa) in alder (Alnus rubra). Similar (to 1-16564?); smaller; "(small deep, narrow at top)" added in pen. Very grimy from use. Globose shape. Horizontal dotted and solid stripes. White and red overlay, 2-faced, on brown. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twining occurs: approximately 2 cm out from start; 1 row approximately 4 cm from start; top 2 rows, forming a rim.
