Hearst Museum object titled Jar, accession number 9-12615a-c, described as Tea jar: ceramic. Globular jar with flat bottom, very short narrow neck, and two small handles applied near neck. Turned ivory lid (b) and ragged silk bag (c) with silk cord drawstring. Interior and exterior of jar has a thick, glossy dark brown to amber glaze with dull greenish flambe towards bottom. Bottom and side up half way to belly is unglazed showing brown body. Lid has short knob in center. Underside had gilded paper, much of which has worn off. Bag (c) is embroidered and striped green of various shades of green. Cord is gold. This vase is possibly an example of Shunkei cha-ire from the Seto kilns which are characterized by a metallic looking dark amber or dark brown colored glaze and have four small handles set close to neck. Named after the original maker, Shunkei.

Hearst Museum object titled Jar, accession number 9-12655a,b, described as Food jar with lid; stoneware, pot is faceted with ten flat panels, round shoulder and base, narrow foot and lip, foot has particles and sand adhering, chip missing from foot, lid is round with beveled top, has inside flange that is unglazed, runny, rust brown ame-yu glaze, glaze is brown where thick yellow where thin, pot used for honey; Yi period (1392-1910) honey storage; Vessels with a dark brown glaze flecked with lighter brown spots and splashes were made in the eighteenth and nineteenth century for use as kitchen ware. They are widely admired in Japan, where they are called ame-yu or ‘ame-glazed’ -ame being a sweet-stuff resembling molasses often used medicinally; hence the Japanese description ame-gusuri or ‘ame-medicine’, which is also employed for this type of ware. Jar 2 15/16” (11.5 cm) diameter, 4” (10.3cm) high. Lid 3 1/16” (8 cm) diameter, 1” (2.5 cm) high.
