Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-11985, described as Old hemispherical parching basket. Tag "Yuki". Second tag "40-B". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled low broad parching basket. Used, with food debris and burns. There are some native repairs. The start is a pinhole start. The coil foundation is peeled shoot splints surrounding one to two rods. The basket wefts are unpeeled and peeled redbud, the redbud on the rim is a darker color. The design includes two horizontal bands, with five rows of redbud each. There is a break in the design at the same space in each band. There are random rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped, with peeled and unpeeled redbud. The rim ending is missing for about three inches. The basket has an exterior workface. The weft fag ends are concealed; the interior moving ends are concealed. There are about 40% split wefts on the interior, with less than 5% split on the exterior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with a down to the right of slant weft twist. The basket has definite Yuki techniques and materials.
Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-12018, described as Very old hemispherical parching basket. Tag: "Yuki" Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled parching basket that has had broken bottom replaced with coiled patch. The basket has food debris. The start on the patch is a flaring coil over splints. The patch has mostly splits with only a few rods and widely spaced wefts. The warps on the rest of the basket are rods and splints. The basket has peeled redbud background wefts and unpeeled redbud design wefts. The design is four horizontal bands of unpeeled redbud that have a break at the same area of the band. The rim is plain wrapped; the rim coil ending is missing. The basket and patch have an exterior workface. There are many split stitches on the backface. On the patch the weft fag ends are bound under, with the moving ends concealed. On the basket the weft fag ends are sometimes trimmed or concealed, but are most often bound under. The basket moving ends are difficult to see, but some are concealed and some are bound under. The basket and patch have a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist. The work direction, materials and techniques used in the basket are consistent with Wailaki manufacture, especially considering the lack of random unpeeled redbud design rectangles.
