Round with incurving sides, flat bottom. 4 areas of complex triangular designs in overlay technique in black Xerophyllum tenax. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att." Per Ralph Shanks: Globular basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is .5 inches of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the edge of the base where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues until the rim where there are two rows of three strand twining followed by one row of plain twining. On the base there is a band of red-dyed woodwardia, followed by a band of beargrass. At the base and at the rim there are bands of red-dyed woodwardia triangles. The main design is four patterns of triangles surrounding a diamond. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface. The overlay is on the outside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks: Globular twined basket bowl "fancy basket". Basket has been glued. Crossed warp starting knot. Overlay on the outside. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia fern. At the starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, after that 2 inches of plain twining, after that 2 weft rows of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until 3/4's of an inch from the rim, where there is 1/2 inch of diagonal twining, followed by two weft rows of plain twining. Starting at the base the design is speckled beargrass followed by the main design of four elements of horizontal striped chevron shaped zigzags. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface. Based on the materials and techniques this is a Northwest California basket, it could be Karuk based on the striped pattern and diagonal twining.
