Twined. Round with incurving sides, flat bottom. 4 zones of geometric designs in brown and black materials. 3 strand parallel twining below rim. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Globular twined basket bowl "fancy basket". Basket has been glued. Crossed warp starting knot. Overlay on the outside. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia fern. At the starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, after that 2 inches of plain twining, after that 2 weft rows of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until 3/4's of an inch from the rim, where there is 1/2 inch of diagonal twining, followed by two weft rows of plain twining. Starting at the base the design is speckled beargrass followed by the main design of four elements of horizontal striped chevron shaped zigzags. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface. Based on the materials and techniques this is a Northwest California basket, it could be Karuk based on the striped pattern and diagonal twining.
