The silver-gray body is cast with a five-pointed star and the slogan “Serve the People” (為人民服務Wei renmin fuwu). The middle character min is enclosed in the star. Both are references to the leadership of Mao. Inscription: A decal in red states, “Sailing the high seas depends on the helmsman” (大海航行靠舵手dahai hangxing kao duoshou). Kiln mark unclear. Hearst Museum object titled Bowl, accession number 9-23605, described as Materials: Glazed porcelain Diameter at rim: 15.5 cm Date: late 1950s-1960s Country: People’s Republic of China   Description: The exterior features four bold characters admonishing “Be industrious and thrifty in managing household” (勤儉持家 qinjian chijia). Characters are outlined in red and set between a decorative band of red and green patterns and flowers around the rim and, below, a red bowstring. Inscription: An unreadable red circular factory kiln mark on foot. Almost identical bowl CB67 has seal “Product of Nantong Ceramic Factory, Jiangsu” (江苏南通瓷厂出品 Jiangsu Nantong cichang chupin). Place of Origin: China, probably Nantong, Jiangsu Province Condition: Good. Signs of wear  Acquisition Data: Beijing, probably Panjiayuan. 2001-2005

Inscription: Red square maker’s mark on the foot: “Manufactured by Feng Quan” (馮詮製造 Feng Quan zhizao) Place of Origin: China Condition: Good. Signs of wear. Acquisition Data: Panjiayuan.
