Hearst Museum object titled Baby carrier, accession number 9-17982, described as Baby carrier.  Carrying pad used by mothers for carrying babies on their back.  Lower section decorated with reverse applique, quatrefoil pattern with metallic half-dome beads in center.  Top is embroidered in circular floral pattern, multi-colors: pink, red, green, yellow, orange, blue and white on black ground.  Stitches: satin, stem and couched stitches & knots.  Blue edging, needle woven with manufactured braid on cut-out curving pattern.  Designs are flowers and insects with human face in central flowers in enter back.  Human figure takes prominent position when it appears in a design.  Cotton, silk, sequins & metal beads.  Cardboard (?) filler for support.  L.  66 cm.  W. 41.5 cm.  Straps - L. 63 cm, L. 62 cm.

Hearst Museum object titled Baby carrier, accession number 9-23285, described as Ceremonial baby carrier Indigo dyed hemp fabric edged in purple cord made of thread which was wrapped in silver wire to create silver and purple stripes. Main band of horizontal stripe appliqué. Straps finished in appliqué, tassels on strings of beads and bells. Cross stitching and appliqué with ric rac edging and coins on body of carrier.

Hearst Museum object titled Baby carrier, accession number 9-21192, described as baby carrier, cotton, old.  one side black cloth only, undecorated.  other side with symmetrical bands appliqué and embroidery on either side of central panel of red, green and yellow embroidery on off-white loosely woven plain weave, all running roughly 3/4 length of piece.  remaining cloth virtually completely covered with bands of applique framing on 4 sides the central panel of applique and cross-stitch embroidery.  center of each cross-stitch motif with raised square white cloth sewn on with red and blue thread.  this end cloth extends out in roughly triangular shape on each side; ends of “triangles” have sewn-on bands of warp-faced and supplementary warp weaving.  warps plied in groups and knotted near ends.  length of cloth - approx. 72 cm, width 38-39 cm; “triangular” extensions add approx. 11-12 cm each side.  length bands including fringe approx. 78-79 cm; width 2.2cm
Hearst Museum object titled Baby carrier, accession number 9-21196, described as Apron.  Indigo-dyed hemp, undecorated.  Consists of 6 pieces of cloth sewn together:  3 pieces (one broad,  2 narrow side pieces) form main section of apron; 3 narrow strips sewn together to form waistband and ties.  All plain weave.  Strips forming ties are casually sewn together  with running stitch in off-white thread, in contrast to dark, extremely regular small stitches sewing together rest of apron.  Lower part of apron heavily soiled.  Apron lower to upper edge (including waistband):  80cm.  Apron width: ~45cm.  Waistband and ties:  ~240cm x 2.5cm (waistband itself) or 1.5cm (ties).

Roughly rectangular cloth, widenning gradually at 2 corners so that one edge is wider than corresponding edge; each corner of widest end has a 97 - 111cm “string” sewn on, formed by a narrow rolled-up piece of cloth.  Fully lined with black cloth; at wide end, lining includes appliqued cloth and plain red cloth folded over from front of piece.  Rectangular section of cloth has 3 panels black cloth alternating with two panels of applique (red,  blue, white, and one small green motif, appliqued on blue background).  Widenning end has 2 lengthwise and 2 crosswise panels of applique (all red, white, and blue appliques on blue background; one panel also with green appliques; lengthwise panels have several lines couched yellow thread).  These panels frame 4.7cm x 14.8cm panel white cloth with red supplementary warp or weft (cannot see edges; probably supp. weft) and green and yellow embroidery.  Edges of widenning section also have triangles of plain red cloth sewn on.  62.6cm L x ~38-67cm W.  “Strings” at wide end as noted.
