Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-28151, described as Twined basket tray. White overlay ground, 1-faced, floated on back; 3 brown zigzag designs radiate from bottom (point) of basket, shows on outside. Mostly plain twined; 3- strand twining from start about 3.5 cm radius; also one row 2 cm from rim. Very flexible. Two tags: "Nongatl". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket tray. Crossed warp starting knot. Probably willow warps and conifer root wefts with a beargrass overlay and strings towards the rim. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 1 3/4 inch, followed by plain twining up to 1 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim. The rim is trimmed. The design is three vertical bands of zigzags outlined by triangles. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay design is primarily on the exterior. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.

Twill twining; one row of 3-strand twining about 3.5 cm from start; 3 top rows more closely worked. Tag: "Nongatl". Per Ralph Shanks: Open-work basket serving tray, used. Crossed warp starting knot. Probably hazel or willow warps with hazel or willow wefts. Starting at the starting knot there is plain twining for 1 1/2 inches, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 3 inches of plain twining, with two rows of close twined weft rows at the rim. The warps are variably placed, but not crossed. The rim is trimmed. The workface is on the exterior. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.

Starting at the starting knot there is plain twining to the rim. There are three closely spaced weft rows at the rim. The warps are variably placed, but not crossed. The rim is trimmed. The workface is on the exterior. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.

Per Ralph Shanks: Twined cooking basket, used, with food residue and abrasions from cooking stones. The materials are willow warps with a conifer root weft and a beargrass overlay. There is some breakage near the rim. There is a crossed warp starting knot. Beginning at the starting knot there is 3 inches of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to an inch and a half from the rim, followed by a single weft row of three strand twining, followed by three weft rows of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim. The rim is trimmed. The main overlay design has three horizontal design bands of beargrass, one band of zigzag, followed by one plain band, followed by a band of triangles. The slant of weft twist is up to the right, with a rightward work direction. The basket has an exterior workface. The overlay is predominately on the exterior. The surface slightly undulates.

A little dirty and worn from use, but still in good condition; 2 lattice-twined ribs in the white horizontal zigzag design; 3-strand twining occurs from start of basket out for a 1.5 cm radius; also 2 rows 6 cm from start. Per Ralph Shanks: The rim is trimmed. Crossed warp starting knot, slightly dissimilar to Northwestern California starting knots. The slant of weft twist is up to the right, with a rightward work direction. The basket has an exterior workface. The overlay is primarily on the exterior. There is a slight undulation.

Plain-twined. 3-strand twining: 3 rows from start, 3 rows about 2 cm from start, 1 row 5.5-7 cm from start. White overlay, single-faced; circular bands of designs. Tag: "Nongatl". Per Ralph Shanks: Flat circular twined basket tray with food residue. Crossed warp starting knot. Probably willow or hazel warps and conifer root wefts, with a beargrass overlay design. Starting at the starting knot there is three rows of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining over two warps, followed by plain twining over one warp for 1 1/4, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining. The rim is trimmed. The design is primarily alternating beargrass and conifer root. The overlay is single-sided with the overlay on the workface. The workface is on the side with the labels. The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.
