Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-164445, described as Unfinished twined basket; open bands; cylindrical shape. Two tags: "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined openwork basket, with untrimmed weft stitch ends, made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The basket has conifer root wefts. The overlay weft material is beargrass and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is one weft row of plain twining, followed by a 0.5 inch of three strand twining, followed by ⅓ inch of plain twining, followed by ⅓ inch of diagonal twining, followed by three weft rows of three strand twining, followed by 0.5 inch of plain twining. Going up the sides of the basket there is openwork with parallel warps alternating with plain twining. A half an inch below the rim there is a single weft row of plain twining followed by a 1/8th of an inch of openwork crossed warps. This is followed by 1/4 inch of plain twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is paired trapezoids. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is single sided, with the design on the exterior. On the base of the basket the workface is on the interior. On the rest of the basket the workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-164449, described as Twined bowl-shaped basket with flaring base.  Tag "Klamath River Tribes Att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket, in the shape of an hourglass/goblet made for sale.  Crossed warp starting knot, overlaid with beargrass.  The warp material is probably hazel. The weft background material is conifer root.  The weft overlay background is beargrass, with red dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern overlay designs.  The main cup, starting at the neck, has three strand twining for a .5 inch.  Plain twining continues until the rim, where there is .25 inch of openwork.  The rim is wrapped with conifer root.  The main design is a band of horizontal red woodwardia steps, outlined in maidenhair fern.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is primarily single sided on the exterior, with some design on the interior.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist.  The base is similar, but the warps are crossed once right below its rim.  The basket is from Northwest California.
