Twined bowl-shaped basket with flaring base. Tag "Klamath River Tribes Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket, in the shape of an hourglass/goblet made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot, overlaid with beargrass. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft background material is conifer root. The weft overlay background is beargrass, with red dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern overlay designs. The main cup, starting at the neck, has three strand twining for a .5 inch. Plain twining continues until the rim, where there is .25 inch of openwork. The rim is wrapped with conifer root. The main design is a band of horizontal red woodwardia steps, outlined in maidenhair fern. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is primarily single sided on the exterior, with some design on the interior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The base is similar, but the warps are crossed once right below its rim. The basket is from Northwest California.
