Native name and meaning: "thali ollai grantham" (palmetto leaf treatise). Width 4.3 cm, length 19 cm.

Hearst Museum object titled Book, accession number 9-12940, described as A 19th century manuscript made of a rectangular strips of palm leaf engraved with a stylus, pierced in two places, bound between painted jackwood ("plav", Artocarpus integrifolia) boards (a red ground with black and yellow designs) and secured with a cord. Native Name and Meaning: "malaypalm thali ollai grantham" (palmetto leaf treatise). Relates to the Puranas, a body of Hindu myths and legends dating back as far as 1500 years. This type of script is an example of a book often used for writing Malayazhma, an archaic form of Malayalam, a language spoken in Kerala. The original cord would have been made of pineapple fiber. Width 12.5 cm, length 35.5 cm.
