Context of use: Collector Kate Delos cut the textile into its present shape and used it for decoration in her own house. Backing put on by Delos, removed at museum. This "Diori Hamani cloth" is an example of a Niger "motif cloth." Diori Hamani was the first president of Niger after independence declared in 1960.

Context of use: Container for henna leaves made into paste used to dye palms and fingernails red (to dye feet they used henna paste covered with plastic wrap). A Kanouri woman would put her whole arm inside the gourd to dye palms and fingernails.
