Mottled green glaze over most of surface with yellow ears, mane, and lip, and ivory colored teeth, horns and eyes.  Incised detail. Hearst Museum object titled Tile, accession number 9-14570, described as Roof tile; Terra Cotta, glaze; clay sculpture; blue, yellow, buff clay body; 16" long, 16" high;  Ridge roof tile; bad condition.  Lion dog crouched on all fours, tall over back, mouth open, teeth bared.  Much of the blue glaze has chipped off Roof ornament, glazed ceramic figure of lion-dog, crouched on all fours on hollow rectangular block base; tall over back, mouth open, teeth bared.  Deep incised lines for fur.  Fore paws grasp front of base.  Lung chih fungus, orcloud represented below belly. Mottled lue-green glaze covers most of figure and base, with yellow details and transparent glazed mouth, lung chin, etc.  Much of the glaze has been worn and chipped off.  H. 39.5 cm, max. Hearst Museum object titled Tobacco case, accession number 9-12557a-d, described as Tobacco case, pipe holder, and ojime: The tobacco case (a) is of soft, coarse grained dark brown wood carved to resemble an owl.  Wings in relief, feathers incised.  The rest is smooth and simple.  Bottom flat, portion cut out and reglued to facilitate the hollowing out of the interior.  The face (b) is of lighter, harder wood, serves as ‘lid’, hinged by the cord.  Prominent beak, inlaid mother of pearl eyes, gouged lines representing feathers.  The pipe holder (c) is carved of dark wood in form of standing man with arms stretched above head, mouth agape.  Back side hollowed out.  Key hole in base.  The ojime (d) is of red, mold formed lacquer, design depicting phoenix and lion-dog (shishi).
Hearst Museum object titled Tray, accession number 9-12425, described as Japan, Ishikawa Prefecture (Kaga), Kutani. Platter, with bail handle, porcelain; with overglaze enamel decoration. Kutani ware. Viewed from top: oblong shape with longsides deeply concave and short sides convex (violin shape). Bail handle joins body at middle of concave sides. Thick massive walls; short vertical sides. Wide rim with brown pigment (beni-e). Bold elaborate decoration on interior in rich enamels: deep blue, dark purple, green, red and yellow enamels, with black lacquer. Yellow wave bordering field of white. Pheasant (?) on tree stump, flowers, grass etc. Leaf and flower design with blue scroll design. Five petal flower design on outer side. Floral design on handle. Foot gouged out. Yellow seal mark (Fuku "prosperity") on base. Height with handle 17 centimeters, maximum length 31 centimeters.
