Black and white negative of man riding on cart pulled by two oxen. On the road to Delhi. Hoefler's original description: "British India. On the high-road to Delhi. India contains so many contradictions that the visitor is constantly puzzled. In some states in India the oxen are so holy that it is considered as great a crime to kill one of these animals as it would be to kill a human being; but at the same time, no matter where you go you will find oxen pulling loads.
