8 x 10" Negative. Kenya. Image depicts 15 Nandi spearmen, posing with Paul L. Hoefler and a fallen lion. Hoefler's original description: "Kenya. Paul L. Hoefler, leader of the Colorado African Expedition, with his fifteen Nandi spearmen. These men became greatly attached to him, and when he visited their villages, they staged a huge dance in him, and when he visited their villages, they staged a huge dance in his honor, and to celebrate the lion spearing victories. By common consent of all they presented to him the man from the first lion speared as a souvenir, and had it made into one of their warrior head dresses. This is a real sacrifice on the part of the man who speared this lion for no greater honor can be his, than to wear the mane as his headdress.
