Overlay decoration; large, shallow. Tag: "NW Cal Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket tray, perhaps a flour/ sifting tray. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, raised. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass. At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until 3/4 inch below the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining, after which plain twining continues to the rim. The main design is a band of diagonally stacked polygons. There are two conifer root horizontal stripes at the rim, above which are four rectangles with a triangle on each side. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily on the inside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwestern California.
