Description:
Pedestal bowl. Twined. Open weave at rim and base. Large twining where base connects with bowl. Yellow with three large brown terraced elements alternating with yellow terraced design on bowl. Base has three diagonally stacked rectangle pairs cut by yellow lines. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl with pedestal, made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel, possibly willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design background is beargrass, with red dyed woodwardia designs. There are several weft rows painted with pink commercial paint on the interior of the base. The bowl, starting at the starting knot, has three strand twining for 1.5 inches. Plain twining continues until the rim where there is 1/4 inch of openwork, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is made up of three large brown terraced elements. On the pedestal there are three parallelograms with triangles on the exterior. The overlay is single sided on the exterior. The pedestal, starting at the point furthest from the basket bowl, has two rows of three strand twining, followed by 1/4 inch of openwork, followed by four rows of three strand twining where it attaches to the bowl. The bowl and pedestal have a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California. Francis Riddell's family was from Orleans, making this possibly Karuk, especially considering the extensive use of red-dyed woodwardia.
