Description:
Round, flat base, diagonal linear design in dark brown on natural ground. Made with conifer root, Woodwardia fern, white grass. Twined. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl. Crossed warp start and three strand twining at the base, becoming plain twining at the sides. The warp sticks appear to be hazel. The basket has conifer root wefts with an overlay of beargrass and probably fern stem design. The design starts at the base and is diagonal stripes, with a circle one row below the rim. There are also alternating rectangles at the base. The basket has an exterior workface with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket has the warp sticks trimmed at rim. Based on the materials and technical features the basket is attributed to Northeastern California: Achumawi, Atsugewi, or Wintu.
