Globular twined basket; two rows of triangles; part of rim missing. Tag "Klamath River Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined globular basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is 0.5 inch of three strand twining followed by ⅓ inch of plain twining, and then 1 inch of diagonal twining, followed by a single weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues up to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining 0.5 inch below the rim. There is a band of beargrass overlay on the base. The main design is two horizontal bands of downward pointing triangles. Continuing up the basket there is a single weft row of maidenhair fern followed by three weft rows of no overlay followed by three rows of beargrass overlay followed by one weft row of alternating beargrass and maidenhair fern. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface. The overlay is only on the outside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwest California, probably Yurok, possibly Wiyot.
