- Comment:
- The "rat nest" deposits under the dome of the South Alcove seem older than other parts of the cave because of their damp, spongy condition, a very advanced stage of decomposition. Moisture, however, in this part of the cave, has probably caused more rapid decay than elsewhere. Rat dung and acids, acrid from moisture (see page) give the reddish color. "Deep S. Alcove" indicates position under the domed roof, south from the approximate center of the Alcove.
