Description:
Coiled, plate shape. Tag "Mission Type". Per Ralph Shanks: Small coiled basketry bowl. Deergrass bundle coil foundation. Wefts are orange juncus background, with black dyed juncus and a small amount of light colored sumac as part of the designs. The designs are a horizontal band with a zigzag and three geometric designs on the base. The main design band is outlined by a single coil of black dyed juncus at the top and bottom. Workface is on the interior, with a rightward work direction. Clipped weft fag ends. The basket has a plain wrapped rim with a short tapered coil ending. Based on the banded design which stops two coils from the rim and the clipped weft fag ends the attribution for this basket is Gabrielino with a slight possibility of being Cahuilla. The design is not typical of Cahuilla design.
