Comment:
Per labels provided by Ira Jacknis: Family of Essie Parish (Kashaya Pomo) removing acorn bread from an earth oven, during the strawberry festival. Left-Right: Daniel Wilder, Daisy Antone Smith, Clifford Scott Jr. (rear); Essie Pinola Parrish, Susie Pinola Gomez (front). Stewarts Point Rancheria, Sonoma County; May 22, 1962. This scene was part of a strawberry festival, the subject of a substantial amount of filming for an intended film that was never completed. The strawberry festival is a springtime first fruits ceremony, to give thanks for the bounty of nature. In order to make acorn bread, the acorn meal is mixed with water and a red clay and formed into loaves, which are placed in an underground pit oven, and cooked overnight. This photograph was shot just as the put was being opened on the next morning.
