Description:
Gourd bowl, blossom end of pericarp; lacquered in the two layered or rayado technique, black over red; inside three design bands from rim, solid, geometric, and floral with duck and two squirrels in center of bowl; outside, geometric fringe design band with radial floral design on bottom; diameter 20 -21cm. Native name Jícara from Nahuatl, xicalli, gourd bowl. It is a vine gourd (Lagenaria). The Rayado technique: second coat of contrasting color with design incised and excess material removed from around the figure leaving design in low relief; see accession envelope No. 2897.
