color photographic print; matted "Dolores (Lola) Pichu (left) and her younger sister Virginia Pichu (right), daughters of Micaela González and her first husband, Pedro Pichu; Santiago fiesta, July 26, 1959." [matted at PAHMA for exhibition]
The eldest sister-even if older than the oldest brother-ranks below him, but otherwise she has considerable authority over younger siblings, and especially younger sisters. She is a mother surrogate and, in past years at least, when both parents were away selling pottery, she would be in effective charge of a household of younger children. . . . [In some instances], adult and married siblings retain a strong liking for each other. . . . So the picture is very much that of other societies; siblings who like each other continue to be good friends and to enjoy each other's company. Those who do not, go their various ways (1967).
