Small cup-shaped twined basket. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl, almost cup shaped. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed Woodwardia fern, and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is 0.5 inch of three strand twining followed by a ⅓ inch of plain twining, and then ⅓ inch of diagonal twining, followed by ⅓ inch of plain twining, followed by a three weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues up to the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining ⅓ inch below the rim. On the base there is a band of red dyed Woodwardia, followed by a band of beargrass. On the side there are several alternating rows of the following materials: Woodwardia, beargrass, maidenhair, beargrass, and then maidenhair. The main design is an overlay background of red dyed Woodwardia with horizontal lines of maidenhair fern. There are diagonal beargrass stepped rectangles bisected by diagonal lines. The alternating rows are repeated near the rim. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface. The overlay is only on the outside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwest California, possibly Karuk.
