Description:
Water bag. Round, shield-shaped leather dyed red. Center leather-wrapped hoop attached to skin by twisted 2-ply leather cordage. Rim diameter 42 centimeters. From Niger, vicinity of Lake Chad, N'guigmi; probably Kanouri. Water bag would be attached to a rope and thrown down a well; when wet it stretches and becomes bucket shaped.
