Small, twined, flaring basket. Tag "Northwest Calif. Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined flared basket. The basket is either a lid or a model/toy basket. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The background weft is conifer root. The weft design overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia and possibly maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is a .5 inch of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues until the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining after which there is three weft rows of plain twining. The design at the base is a weft row of black fern, followed by woodwardia, followed by beargrass. At the side is a band of downward pointing triangles, followed by two woodwardia bands separated by a weft of beargrass. At the rim is a band of woodwardia and then a black fern weft row. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is only on the outside. The basket is from Northwest California.
