- Purchased from Bertina Lopez Cumez by ACW at her home in Santa Catarina Palopo in July 2009. Woven by unknown weaver in Santiago Atitlan, across Lake Atitlan from Santa Catarina Palopo. 2 paper tags at back neckline: (removed) —“ACW #21” —“Huipil from Santiago Atitlan, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Purchased from Bertina Lopez Cumez at her home in Santa Catarina Palopo, by Lake Atitlan, in July 2009. Machine embroidered flowers at neckline, & many birds. Some birds & bullion knots = handemb. Bullion knots = new technique in Guate.” 2 panels; 1 hemmed, 1 finished selvage on each. Plain weave with some wefts weaving over multiple warps. Unseamed sides. Blue warps with narrow burgundy warp stripes. Narrow bands of weft patterning encase bands of embroidered birds and flowers across top half of huipil. Decoratively cut neckline surrounded by machine embroidered flowers. Huipil is notable both for use of bullion knotsin the hand embroidered flowers and also for the integration of hand embroidery with machine embroidery throughout the huipil. Detail photo shows dimensional bullion knot flowers next to flatter machine embroidered bird. Appears to be an early use of bullion knots in Guatemalan Maya embroidery/weaving.
