Description:
Cast of Grüttner’s Model of the E pediment sculptures of the great temple of Zeus at Olympia. Scale 1:10. Original model made for the Olympia exhibit in the Berlin Camposanto. Original model in Berlin. Original marbles in the Museum of Olympia. Original marbles at Olympia, set up in the Museum by Gruttner in accord with the arrangement of Ernst Curtius. Gruttner’s full size restoration under Professor Treu’s direction, and Treu’s exhaustive study and experimental arrangements since give a fairly final authority to his exposition. It has been carried out full size in the Royal Albertinum, Dresden. The authorship of the perdiments by Paionios and Alkamenes, as given by Pausanias, in Description of Greece, is suspected to rest on a misinterpretation of their signatures of other, contiguous works. With Paionios, of the Nike. Furtwaengler attributes both pediments to Parian trade sculptors (!). The date of the temple’s completion was 456 B. C.
