- MATERIALS, TECHNIQUES: Treadle loomed 2 singles warp, 2 singles weft white. Supplementary weft done in 5 singles light blue on white cotton background; 2-ply sedalina in red, green, purple, blue, light blue; silk floss in yellow. Native name and meaning: Huipil diario- everyday blouse CONTEXT OF USE: Over one half of the garment is supple. weft brocading. Vertical tucks from shoulder line to plain weave occur front and back on both sides. Multicolored randa 1/2 inch wide is at front and back center from neckline to midway point of 1 1/2 inches horizontal band of light blue supplementary weft brocading. Armholes are bound with blue/black commercial cloth. Inside of brocaded area is faced with gray and yellow plain weave commercial cloth,p machine stitched. Embroidery in multi-colored silk floss. A slit 5 1/2 inches long for nursing appears to one side of the randa and has been hand-basted closed. Dating relates to use of colors-- purple and yellow, designs smaller, closer together than newer huipiles. Neck decoration influenced by Quetzaltenango; lining gives more warmth.
