hung in temples behind image of the deities; painted according to the season and the particular festival in progress; in recent times 'pechwais' have been produced for sale to pilgrims; 'Krishna', wandering in the forest on day, came across 16 'gopis' (milkmaids) swimming in a pool. Seizing their clothes, he would only let them have the clothes if they came out of the pool one at a time ... Made by Kanhaiyalal Yitthalaas Mandir

Comment:
Note on technique: "The cloth is first primed with a thin starch solution to give it a smooth surface. The artist then lays out the design of the picchavai in charcoal or sepia paint, after which a white base coat is applied. Next, he brushes in the basic colours. They are consolidated by burnishing (polishing with a smooth stone) from the back of the picchavai; it is then ready for detail work. Finally, the painter adds ornaments in gold and silver paint, burnishing the pigment to make it shine." http://jsis.artsci.washington.edu/programs/soasia/nathadwara/nath13.html Made by Kanhaiyalal Yitthalaas Mandir
