- Twined and openwork basketry letter pouch. Tag "Klamath River Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Openwork wall-pocket/ basket pouch, made for sale. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The basket has conifer root wefts. The basket has a weft overlay of beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia. The base has plain twining of up to the right and down to the right slants of weft twists. Going up the sides of the basket there is a .5 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by crossed warp openwork, followed by plain twining, followed by crossed warp openwork, followed by plain twining, followed by parallel warp openwork ending in an undulating rim at the front of the pouch, continuing up on the rear of the pouch where there are two inches of crossed warp openwork followed by plain twining followed by crossed warp openwork, followed by plain twining, followed by parallel warp openwork terminating in an undulating rim. The rim is wrapped with beargrass and red-dyed woodwardia around two weft rows of plain twining and reinforcing material. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist, except at the base where it alternates as previously mentioned. The overlay is primarily single-sided, with a simpler design on the interior. The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California. There is a hair woven into the basket.
