Coiled. Round, flat base, sides incurving at rim, circular rectangular design in black and dark brown on natural ground. Tag: "Mission Type depressed bowl". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled globular basket bowl. The foundation is deergrass bundle at the base turning to mixed deergrass and juncus bundle in the rest of the basket, finishing in the last coil in all juncus rods. The wefts are orange, brown and black dyed juncus, with a sumac background. The design includes a dark band at the edge of the base and at the top of the basket outlining three sets of step designs with three orange geometric designs, also inside the border. There are two plain coils below the rim. The basket has a rightward work direction and an exterior workface, with mixed clipped and bound under weft fag ends. The basket has a plain wrapped rim with a herringbone rim finish. Southwestern California.
