Coiled, deep tray. Tag "Mission Type". Per Ralph Shanks: Broad bowl in cooking basket shape, possibly used. The basket has an oval start which is unusual in a round basket like this. Wear patterns on the basket make it appear old. The materials include a deergrass bundle foundation; sumac weft on the base and sides with tan and black-dyed juncus designs. The design is a primary band of zigzags. The design is two coils below the rim. There are five vertical bands of chains of diamonds on the sides of the basket and one coil of black-dyed juncus on the beginning of the base. Workface is on the interior. Rightward warp direction with clipped and bound under weft fag ends. The clipped fag ends are used along the edges of the designs and in the designs. There are some clipped fag ends in the background. The bound under fag ends are primarily in the background. The basket has a plain-wrapped rim with an inch and a half herringbone ending. Attributed to the Gabrielino because of the design layout, which includes the primary design two coils below the rim, the vertical designs ending at the base with a coil of black-dyed juncus, the presence of clipped fag ends, and the use of a sumac in the base. The basket design layout is only used by the Gabrielino and the Chumash. The Chumash place their design further away from the rim and have less use of bound under weft fag ends, and are more likely to use a three rod juncus foundation.
