- Description:
- Box, lacquer; heart-shaped box with design of a rooster with long tail, and two sparrows perched on a pine tree limb, all in slight relief (Hiramakie) gold, red and brown; ground of 'crackled white*. (Keiran-nuri). Bottom and interior is gloss black lacquer (kuro-urushi). Rim of top and bottom is gold much of which was rubbed off. Crack in top and many chips in surface. Height 1.8 cm; Maximum Width 6.2 cm. *Keiran-nuri is the technique of inlaying crushed egg shell into the surface which is then covered with black lacquer and ground down until the white shows through. Also known as Tamago-nuri (egg lacquer).
