MATERIALS, TECHNIQUES: Backstrap-loomed with cotton yarns. Warp 1 and 2 singles in red (predominate), white and blue; one 2-ply in red and blue. Weft in 1 and 2 singles in red (predominate), white and blue. CONTEXT OF USE: Red warps and blue and white stripes create a plaid design; older style that ceased being used after the 1940s (Asturias de Barrios: photo #20); could have been woven in the 1960s-70s when Whittakeer was collecting; left 1/8 and right 1/8th vertical sections done in a lighter red than the central portion of cloth; on both sides of cloth it is apparent where yarns are knotted together/finished off. CONSERVATION: Overall in good condition; no apparent holes, burns or tears; one warp selvedge is stretched out of shape so individual warps and wefts are separated and exposed; all selvedges exhibit some wear; yarns are coming loose.
