Description:
tea pot, porcelain: w/ lid (b); 'Canton, Willow ware' blue and white. Wide, 'top'- shape w/ concave vertical side, high shoulder, and very narrow, short neck and foot. Recessed lid-rest in mouth. "?-mark" shaped handle, and 's-shaped' spout. Lid (b): high dome shape, w/ ball finial. deep collar: broken w/ piece missing. Two panels on vert. sides of pot w/ river and temple scene in dark blue underglaze wash. Cross-hatched band on blue wash ground under neck w/ scalloped lower fringe. Extension of same on bottom of lid. Boat scene on top of lid. Chips in mouth rim, handle and spout. Stained interior.

Context of use:
Made for export. Tea pot. 'Canton' ware derived its name from the city (Kuang chou: Canton) where purchased and export departure point, though manufactured at Ching-te-chen. Canton ware was exported in great volumes from 1785-mid-19c. and used as ballast on the ships. The design motif is the origin and inspiration on the English 'Willow ware'.
