Japan, Saga Prefecture (Hizen), Arita, Nangawara kiln. Bowl, porcelain with overglaze enamel decoration. Kakiemon ware. Shallow bowl with scalloped rim resembling 8-brace marks. Lower half of sides almost vertical, with small ribs; upper half turns out. Almost flat bottom, short foot. Delicate design on bottom depicting Japanese rooster and hen in red, blue, green, and black enamel, and a yellow chick. Bamboo trees to one side with blue, green, and red leaves. Pure white ground. 8 symmetrical scroll and flower designs on border. Two flowering branch designs underneath. Height 3.5 centimeters, rim diameter 18 centimeters.
