Description:
Basketry rattle containing shells. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined openwork rattle. There is metal and several shells, including abalone, inside. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably willow or hazel. The weft material is hazel or willow. Starting at the starting knot, there are two rows of close plain twining over multiple warps followed by openwork wefts that are primarily over two to three warps. The warps are primarily parallel with some crossed. The handle is made of the warp sticks drawn into a large bundle. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist, with an unknown work direction. The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
