Twined basket with overlaid designs; zigzag parallelograms; damaged base and rim. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined globular basket bowl. Crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is in beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia. The basket is in poor condition and the bottom is not secure enough to allow close study of the twining techniques. The start has plain twining, followed by several weft rows of diagonal twining, followed by plain twining, which continues to the rim, where there is a single weft row of three strand twining followed by plain twining, all over two warps. The rim is trimmed. The main design is comprised of a horizontal band of 5 elements, each comprised of 5 stacked parallelograms. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwest California.
