Twined basket with openwork below wrapped rim. Alternating brown and straw - colored rectangles in checkerboard design. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att." Second tag "Kl. R. Tr. att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl, probably made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, a reddish material that looks like maidenhair fern, and a material like wild grape at the rim. Starting at the starting knot, there are 3 weft rows of plain twining, followed by 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 1/2 weft rows of plain twining, followed by 1 weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there is 1/2 inch of crossed warp open work. The rim appears to be comprised of 3 weft row of plain twining with reinforcing rods and strips of material wrapped with beargrass and possibly wild grape. The main design is a checkered rectangle design in beargrass with occasional reddish material. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, on the exterior with some design coming through to the interior. The basket is from the Southern Humboldt Athabaskans based on the design and the unevenness of the basket surface.
