Accession number:
Acc.193
Description:
Cast of Hermes at Olympia (Latin: Mercury) by Praxiteles, as restored by Professor Schaper of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. Compare with our cast of the more slightly restored original marble. Done in Berlin. Professor Treu and Sculptor Ruhm of Dresden have discovered reason to modify Professor Schaper’s ponderation of the statue very slightly. In setting up the marble, Gruttner gave a horizontal position to the strut between leg and tree trunk. The corrected stand aims its plumb line by the weighted tip of the god’s discarded cloak. New: right arm, a few fillings about face and body of the infant, its right arm, the tibias of Hermes, his left foot. The restoration has also been executed in Carrara marble.
